Distinguished and Famous people from Port Lincoln

🏋️ Dean Lukin

Dean Lukin combined the work of a Port Lincoln tuna fisherman with weightlifting. At Los Angeles in 1984 he won the super-heavyweight title, following Commonwealth Games gold in Brisbane in 1982; another Commonwealth title followed in Edinburgh in 1986. Fishing remained central to his life, making full-time training difficult to arrange. His sporting rise involved fitting extraordinary strength into an already physical working routine. The Australian Olympic team chose him to carry its flag at the Los Angeles closing ceremony. Back home, the tuna season still mattered: an Olympic medal did not make the family fishing business run itself.

🏉 Eddie Betts

Eddie Betts grew up in Port Lincoln and helped Mallee Park win the 2001 under-17 premiership. Returning with Adelaide for a 2015 pre-season match, he kicked four goals in front of family, friends and a crowd delighted to see him back at Centenary Oval. The afternoon connected his AFL career with a place where he had played before national fame. Betts became celebrated for goals from improbable angles, but this homecoming was also about familiar faces around the boundary. His father and fellow footballer Graham Johncock, a relative, were among the people he saw at the ground.

🏊 Kyle Chalmers

Port Lincoln-born Kyle Chalmers won the men’s 100-metre freestyle at the Rio Olympics in 2016, aged eighteen. It was Australia’s first Olympic victory in that event since Michael Wenden in 1968. He returned to the Olympic podium with silver in the same individual event at Tokyo and again at Paris, alongside relay success across his Games career. The event leaves little room for a slow start or an untidy finish: a handful of strokes can separate the medals. He continued competing internationally while developing into one of Australia’s most accomplished sprint swimmers.
